The Portuguese Army (Exército Português) is looking to procure ARVs (Armoured Recovery Vehicles) to support the new Krauss Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG Leopard 2A6 battle tanks fleet in service with the Brigada Mecanizada mechanized brigade. The Portuguese Army is planning to procure around two vehicles in order to replace in the job the M88A1. The Army previously planned to upgrade its M88A1´s. MLC 70 Class Armoured Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB) vehicles will be as well needed in order to replace the in service M60A1.

Rheinmetall Defence GmbH has briefed the Portuguese Army on its ARV 3 Buffel (Buffalo) vehicle as well Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH on its WISENT Leopard 1 & 2 based vehicles.


Under a EUR 77.700 Million contract awarded to the NAMSA (NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency), the Portuguese Ministry of Defence procured 37 Netherlands Army surplus Leopard 2A6 battle tanks as well a single Leopard 2A4 driver training tank, spare parts, maintenance and testing tools, munitions, 74 MAG 7.62 light machine guns, manuals, training services and the tactical radio integration. The fleet is progressively replacing the M60A3 TTS on two battle tanks Squadron´s with the Mechanized Brigade Grupo de Carros de Combate.


The Esquadrão de Reconhecimento (Reconnaissance Squadron) will may get as well the Leopard 2A6. Portugal is receiving the fleet in four batches, two of them yet delivered (18 A6´s and the driver training tank). The next batch is planned to be delivered very soon and the last in November.

The Portuguese fleet is being fitted with the Portuguese made P/GRC 525A tactical radio from EID SA integrated with the original Thales Communications SOTAS digital intercom system.

KMW has delivered and installed dehumidification devices for the storage of the tanks as well briefed the Portuguese Army on combat simulator solutions for the Leopard 2. The briefing covered gunnery/combat simulators as well as driving simulators. The company also carried EMC tests on a Leopard 2 fitted with the P/GRC 525A used as a prototype and is as well carrying technical expertise and logistic services via its GLS Gesellschaft für Logistischen Service GmbH on the fleet transition under a contract with the NAMSA.


In June, the Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa) has received three AM General LLC (part of General Motors Corporation)  M1165A1 W/AC B3 HMMWV (High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle) 4×4 light armoured vehicles for its TACP/FAC (Tactical Air Control Party/Forward Air Control) teams.

TACP/FAC teams based at the COFA (Comando Operacional da Força Aérea) operational command facilities in Monsanto operate also four Toyota/Salvador Caetano Land Cruiser HZJ-78 light and not protected vehicles fitted with communication devices.


The Frag 5 protected vehicle have a BAE Systems made armoured turret fitted with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, Plasan Sasa Ltd armoured kits on fitted on the vehicle floor, a Trivec Avant Corp AV2090-7S X-wing SATCOM antena, two Wegmann USA Inc 76mm smoke discharging systems, Harris RF 5800H-MP Falcon II and RF5800U-MP Falcon II tactical communications systems, a Harris 10181-5180-01 tactical amplifier speaker, a Kenwood Corporation TM-271E VHF-FM radio and Harris made RF-394 and SB-V16F antenas. Two of the vehicles will receive the Netline Ltd C-Guard jamming system. The fleet will receive as well new comunication systems and rugged computers. A TACP/FAC team will may be sent to Afganistan before the end of 2009.


The fleet is fitted with the same smoke discharging system of the Portuguese Army Steyr GmbH PANDUR II armoured vehicles.

In Afganistan when deployed during three years with the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force), the Portuguese Air Force TACP/FAC´s used the Portuguese Army Panhard General Defense VBL (Véhicule Blindé Léger) M11 fitted with a MG 42-59 light machine gun and devices like the Harris AN/PRC 117F Falcon II multiband radio communication system, Vectronix VECTOR IV laser range finder, Rockwell Collins Inc Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR) and the Northrop Grumman GLTD II tripod mounted laser designator.



On June 20, the Portuguese Navy hosted a maritime SAR (Search And Rescue) exercise on the Douro river in the area of the Northern City of Régua. The exercise called SAREX RÉGUA 2009 seen the rescue of civilian passengers of a touristic commercial vessel owned by the company Douro Azul. The exercise has been conducted with the collaboration and involvement of local and regional organizations.

NRP “Arpão ´´, the second and last Portuguese Navy Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft GmbH (part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG) Tridente Class U209PN Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) powered submarines has been launched at a ceremony held in Kiel today June 18. The submarine is planned to be delivered in 2011.

Together with NRP “Tridente´´ (Trident) to be delivered in 2010, the submarine will integrate the 5º Esquadrilha de Submarinos and replace the last of three Albacora Class diesel powered submarines.

When delivered and operational, the U209PN be capable to perform tasks like ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) and ASuW (Anti Surface Warfare) operations, surveillance and reconnaissance, mine laying, covert operations and support of forces.

The U209PN have a maximum speed of over 20 kt (submerged) and a range of more than 10,000 Miles and is manned by a crew of 33 and have an endurance of 45 days.

A procurement contract for both 1842 Tonnes and 67.9 Meters long submarines worth around EUR779 Million (EUR973 with the bank interest), including an EUR1210 Million offset agreement was signed by the Portuguese MoD procurement agency DGAED and the German Submarine Consortium (GSC) in April 2004. A comprehensive integrated logistic support package and training activities form part of the contract.

Each submarine carry eight 533mm tubes for the WASS SpA Black Shark Lightweight torpedoes and SEI SpA MN 102 Murena mines. Weapons, CSU 90 sonar, Raytheon MINS navigation system, radar and SAAB Avitronics COMINT/ESM systems are integrated in an ATLAS Elektronik GmbH  ISUS 90 management system.

Iceland Hafmynd-Gavia Ltd company will deliver two GAVIA remotely operated vehicles to the Portuguese Navy under a contract awarded by the NAMSA (NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency).

The GAVIA system will be delivered to Portugal this year and will primarily be used for Mine Counter Measures (MCM) applications.

The GAVIA autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is a fully modular, man portable autonomous vehicle available in depth ratings in excess of 1000 Meters and custom vehicles with depth ratings of 2000 meters.

The Brazilian Defence Minister, Mister Nelson Azevedo Jobim will officially visit Portugal this month. A meeting with its Portuguese counterpart, Mister Nuno Severiano Teixeira is planned to be held on June 19.

The mock up of the Skylander SK-105 light transport aircraft is being showed at this year Paris Air Show event. French GECI International previously planned to build the aircraft in Portugal by a newly created subsidiary called Sky Aircrafts Industries but the project moved to France.
