French armoured vehicles specialist Renault Trucks Defense has unveiled an improved version of its VAB (Véhicule de l’Avant Blindé) amphibian wheeled armoured vehicle. The vehicle called VAB MK2 is available in 4×4 and 6×6 variants both of them offers configurations like personnel carrier, ambulance, command post and weapons carrier.

When compared with the previous VAB, VAB MK2 includes capabilities like an increased payload, better protection and upgraded mobility. All windows of the vehicle are now external in order to provide protection again fire blasts.

VAB MK 2 4×4 has a combat weight of 15.8 Tonnes and VAB MK2 6×6 a weight of 17.2 Tonnes both capable to be expended. The vehicles which have a range of 1000 km can reach a top speed of 105 km/h. VAB MK2 is powered by a Renault DXi7 diesel engine with 320 hp coupled to a ZF Friedrichshafen AG 6HP502 automatic gearbox.

The vehicle can be fitted with manned or remotely controlled weapon stations armed with 12.7mm or 20m guns. The vehicle has an internal volume of 11m3 and is able to accommodate up to 12 soldiers.

VAB MK2 can integrate a battle management system, a digital tactical radio system, an intercom system, a gunshot detector, smoke grenade launchers, day/night cameras, a climate control system, ABS brakes, Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS), a winch, NBC protection, add-on armour, a fire extinguishing system and suspended shock absorbing seats.

ince 1973, the French Army has received 3800 VABs in 37 different configurations said a French Army high staff representative to PoADU. An upgraded version called VAP TOP is in service with French troops deployed in Afghanistan.
