Spanish company Indra Sistemas SA will implement electronic defence systems in two new Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft GmbH (part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG) U-212A submarines to be built under licence by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri-Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA. The fleet will be operated by the Italian Navy (Marina Militare Italiana) from 2015 and 2016 respectively as the S528 and S529. Italy operate two U-212A named S526 ITS Salvatore Todaro and S527 ITS Scire.

According the company, the system to be integrated on the submarines will allow them to notice any active radar within a certain range. The analysis capacity of the system enables detection of nearly 100% of the signals, not only the weakest but also those with low probability of detection.

Indra Sistemas SA has already implemented this system on U-212A submarines in service with the German Navy (Deutsche Marine).
