The first ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems U209PN, S160 NRP “Tridente” submarine has been officially received by the Portuguese Navy (Marinha Portuguesa) on September 8.

Modern facilities has also been built to support the “5º Esquadrilha de Submarinos” flotilla composed by NRP “Tridente”  and  the second S161 NRP “Arpão”  submarine to be dlivered in 2011.

Each one of the eight tubes fitted on the submarine is able to launch Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei SpA/DCNS Black Shark heavyweight torpedoes, Boeing UGM-84D Block II Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles and SEI SpA MN102 MURENA multi-influence mines.

U209PN submarines includes the ATLAS Elektronik GmbH ISUS 90-50 (Integrated Sensor Underwater System) combat management system, ATLAS Elektronik GmbH CSU 90 hull-mounted passive and active search and attack sonar, Carl Zeiss Optronics GmbH SERO 400 periscope, Carl Zeiss Optronics GmbH OMS 100 optronic mast system, Thales Defence Deutschland GmbH SPHINX radar system and SAAB Avitronics UME 200 elecelectronic countermeasure system.
