The Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa-FAP) has already received it first EADS Airbus Military C-295M Persuader maritime surveillance aircraft.

The aircraft of a fleet of five units remain at the company Seville based facilities in Spain for training operations.

The last aircraft is scheduled to be delivered in November said the Portuguese Air Force to PoADU.

Portugal has acquired a total of twelve C-295Ms tactical transport aircraft, five of them configured for maritime surveillance tasks which are called VIMAR (VIgilância MARítima).

The C-295M fleet is operated by the 502 Squadron “Elefantes” from Montijo air base Nº6.

The VIMARs will complement the five  P3Cplus upgraded  by Lockheed Martin and OGMA-Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal SA on maritime surveillance operations. The Portuguese Air Forces operates two of the six P-3P Orion aircraft, formerly P-3Bs of the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force).
