The Portuguese PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) police force is receiving six Pit-Bull FX wheeled armoured vehicles for urban operations. The 7212 kg vehicle procured to US company Alpine Armoring Inc is based on a commercial F-550 XL light truck from Ford Motor Company.

The fleet to be operated by the UEP (Unidade Especial da Polícia) is equipped with a day/night observation sight from FLIR Systems Inc. The sensor designed Navigator II is an economic, fixed mounted thermal imager usually used onboard vessels.

PoADU understand that the sight should be protected and the vehicles equipped with a mount capable to be armed with a smoke grenades launching system or a small water canon or even a remotely controlled station fitted with a non lethal weapon.


Admiral José Carlos Torrado Saldanha Lopes has been nammed the Portuguese Navy (Marinha Portuguesa) Chief of Staff (Chefe do Estado-Maior da Armada-CEMA) on November 30.

The 9801 military personnel strong Portuguese Navy is undergoing a major modernization process of its fleet thanks to the acquisition of two U209PN Tridente Class submarines, two ex Royal Netherlands Navy Bartolomeu Dias Class Type M multi-purpose frigates being upgraded with communication systems, two NPO (Navio Patrulha Oceânico) ocean patrol vessels of Viana do Castelo Class to be delivered soon, two NPO based combat pollution vessels, five LFC (Lancha de Fiscalização Costeira) coastal patrol vessels to be built by the Portuguese shipbuilder Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo SA, upgrade of the three Vasco da Gama Class MEKO 200PN Mod III frigates and the upgrade of Super Lynx MK95 helicopters with armoured plates and mounts armed with 12.7mm heavy machine guns from FN Herstal SA.

Future plans include the construction of a command and projection ship designed NPL (Navio Polivalente Logístico, additional ocean patrol vessels and three additional coastal patrol vessels and could cover the procurement of a fleet replenishment ship to replace the A5210 NRP “Bérrio”.

From 2011, the Fuzileiros marine corps is to receive 20 General Dynamics European Land Systems-Steyr GmbH PANDUR II VBLA (Viatura Blindada Ligeira Anfíbia) 8×8 amphibian wheeled armoured vehicles. The acquisition of 4×4 light armoured vehicles under the VTLB programme is also planned by the Ministry of Defence procurement agency DGAIED (Direcção Geral de Armamento e Infra-Estruturas de Defesa).

Brazilian aerospace company EMBRAER SA has commenced the first phase of its new construction project in Évora, Portugal, a 330,000 square-foot facility dedicated to manufacturing complex airframe structures and components in composite materials. The completion of this industrial unit is scheduled for the end of 2011, while the production phase will start during 2013.

Portuguese contractor Ramos Catarino SA is responsible for the excavation work, foundations and to build the infrastructures.

The Portuguese Army has received undisclosed quantities of FIAT SpA DUCATO 120 MultiJet commercial vans. Recent additions to the administrative fleet include Citroen Berlingo, Mistsubishi STRAKAR L200 and  Land Rover Defender light vehicles.

Switzerland sells 42 Krauss Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG Leopard 2A4 battle tanks to German manufacturer Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH.

Between 1987 and 1993, Switzerland has received a total of 380 Leopard 2A4 some of them locally assembled. With the Switzerland land forces, the Leopard 2A4 is designed Pz 87.

The battle tanks supplied without the L44 120mm gun and machine gun and further components like communication systems will be converted to protected specialized support vehicles.

Swiss company RUAG Land Systems Ltd and Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH formed a team to propose the KODIAK 3 armoured engineering vehicle which is based on the Leopard 2 chassis to Leopard 2 operators around the world.

The two days NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) summit will start tomorrow at Lisbon FIL (Feira Internacional de Lisboa) international exhibition center premises.

The meeting to be attended by NATO countries and partners leaders is expected to focus on the NATO new strategic concept including missile defence, relations with Russia, current and future operations and missions, terrorism and NATO´s role in Afghanistan.

The future organization of NATO commands which includes Portugal´s based Joint Force Command Lisbon (JFCL) could be on the agenda. The JFCL is headed by French Army Lieutenant General Philippe Stoltz.

NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that Lisbon will be one of the most important summits in NATO’s history.

The Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) has completed the modification and upgrade of the F100-PW-200C engines.

The work carried by Portuguese Air Force staff and personnel from Pratt & Whitney (part of United Technologies Corporation) included modifications on a total of 25 engines.

The upgrade of the 25 engines to the F100-PW-220E standard is part of the Lockheed Martin F-16A/M combat aircraft update programme.

PoAF F-16A/B/AM/BM aircraft are operated by Squadron 201 “Falcões” and Squadron 301 “Jaguares” from Monte Real air force base Nº5.
