During “ÁQUILA” tactical training exercise, the Portuguese Army BrigInt (Brigada de Intervenção) intervention brigade has employed three PANDUR armoured vehicles configured for medical evacuation tasks.

A total of 10 tactical armoured field ambulances are to be delivered by GDELS-Steyr GmbH (part of General Dynamics European Land Systems) and its Portuguese partner Fabrequipa-Sociedade Industrial de Equipamentos Rodoviário Lda to the Portuguese Army. The fleet is to be manned by the BrigInt on medical evacuations tasks when on operation in the field.

The type includes a four beds layout, portable aluminum field beds, military-grade ambulance equipment needed to care for patients, including oxygen concentrators, the thermal identification beacon (TIB), the threat detection system (TDS), the combat identification panels, the climate control suite, the automatic fire extinguishing system and communication systems.

When compared with the PANDUR II carrier, the ambulance version features a higher and modified roof, a transport basket, specific lighting systems and is not fitted with armament and smoke grenades launchers.

The crew is composed by the driver, the commander and two medical personnel.
